I went in blind, more or less expecting a slightly more satirical Marriage Story (2019) so this was a fun surprise. I actually quite dig Cruz's line about while how this relationship is over, their next relationship might be with each other. While both of them are miserable and resentful towards each other, their grievances are not with each other but with their selves; fundamentally there is hope. Perhaps a bit sentimental but it works to the film's benefit.
