This remake of Kurosawa's 1952 Ikiru had to be set in a fictonalized, historical post-war London because at its core, more so than a timeless and contemplative exploration of finding meaning in one's live, I find this story to be one of hope and the power of ordinary people to change society for the better--even when bureaucracy and middle-management labor might reduce one's own personhood.

Excellent performance by the lead actress in her painful depiction of a desire to belong while constantly pushing away anyone that gets close; but halfway through the film does lose its focus and I felt there was virtually no character development from that point onward.

Barely aims and still misses.

Although a significant improvement over his previous release (the abysmal 2019 Weathering with You), Shinkai is reluctant to deviate from the formula that made Your Name such a success, and I felt that despite all-out nice performances, the film and its emotional payoff is particularly held back by his least memorable protagonist yet.

A shallow, borderline offensive attempt at art-house film and social criticism.
