With its deliciously campy dialogue and acting, excellent pacing, and practical visual effects that make the eponymous creature the most imposing one thus far, the most recent rendition of Godzilla is by far the best I've seen and an absolute treat.
On the flip side, Godzilla films serve as a window into the societal sensibilities of the period they're made in; historically at various times having served as a criticism of US war crimes, of its own imperial past, or of ecological destruction. Unsurprisingly, the current one decontextualizes Godzilla from the US's nuclear attacks and instead positions the US as an equal and even ally during the cold war. Furthermore, it is the second 2023 Japanese film hit to absolve kamikaze fighters as victims lacking agency, and, while criticizing aspects of the imperial government, does portray a strong patriotic message of self-sacrifice for one's country and family.
